“The last days of Brother Ray” by David Ritz
Summary: This article opens with a strong sense of direction, devoid of pretense on the part of Brother Ray. Essentially Ritz describes meeting Ray and how humble and “raw-as country” he was. Ritz conveys to the reader the journey of Ray though his life thus far. It tells of his escapades, his tours, his spiritually or lack there of, and what drove Ray to be defined not by his disability but by his musical prowess.
Analysis/reflection: Through the profanity and the lusting after women and all the bad that Ray Charles did, in the end he found in himself a greater strength then personal motives. He found that living beyond ones self was far more important then living for ones self. The reader in turn realizes that Ray Charles wasn’t an immoral man simply amoral. Defined by what he found as the truth.
